time to recalibrate

Once upon a time, when GPS units just came out, I purchased one for my car. I was so excited to not have to break the map out every time I needed directions, and since I'm directionally challenged, this would happen A LOT. I remember when I would make a wrong turn or not do what it said, it would automatically change the directions to match my inability to handle the simple turns. Every time it would say, "Recalibrating" and it would get me turned back around to going the right way. Sometimes, our bodies will tell us we need to recalibrate because our systems have gotten off course and we need a fresh perspective to our current situation.

If you look up self-care ideas in Pinterest, there are literally hundreds of different ideas. The problem is as teachers, we read those ideas and then we keep up with the hectic schedule, which provides zero to recalibrate personally and professionally. Here are some ways to help you keep a balanced and healthy lifestyle both at school and home.

At School

1. Ask for help

2. leave the teacher in school

3. learn to say no

4. refresh, renew, and replenish their educational batteries with new ideas, attending seminars, and just recapturing the simplicity of the joy of teaching

5. stop evaluating yourself in comparison with others and quit worrying about what other people will say about you

At home

6. find alone time

7. "exercise" 20-30 minutes three times a week

8. prep for work

9. carve out "Me" time

10. mood check
